HAPPYiZOverthinking Coffee

For anyone who’d like to know beforehand what it’s like inside

Some of us find a new place easier if we know about the light, the sound and the colours beforehand. We don’t list every object; we describe what it’s like inside in general.

The room is still changing; if something important changes, we’ll update this section.

3D image, not a photo: a corner of a room with a pale marble floor and a white wall. On the left, a round dark-green side table with a tray top and a cobalt-blue cup on it; on the right, a cognac-coloured quilted lounge chair with light metal legs. Warm light from the side casts shadows on the wall and the floor.

  • Colours

Most surfaces are light: white walls, a pale marble floor, sage-green frames. Strong colours appear mostly in single spots; samples are at the end of this section.

  • Light

By day, light comes in through the glass front. On the ceiling there’s a fluorescent tube and spotlights; we’re planning softer light. The shiny floor reflects it.

  • Sound

The door opens onto the street; when it’s open, you hear the street. Hard surfaces can make sound echo, and events are louder. Hours without music will be on the notice board once they’re set.

  • Steps

There’s a marble step in front of the entrance and another inside on the way to the back; we haven’t measured them yet. If you’re coming with a wheelchair or a pushchair, message us first and we’ll look at it together.

  • Seating

An armchair for sitting alone, and chairs at tables.

  • How busy it gets

During events it can get busier and louder. You can check the notice board or ask beforehand whether anything is on that day.

  • Taking a break

For now there’s no separate quiet room.

  • Cameras and animals

There are security cameras in the room; if you have questions about the recordings, message us. Sometimes there’s a cat or a dog inside.

  • Sage green: door, awning and mesh partitions
  • Cognac: armchair
  • Orange: our first drawing on the glass
  • Gold: today’s lettering on the glass
  • Cream: marble floor
  • White: walls
  • Butterfly: blue, purple and pink from our logo

The colours of this page come from the room too; we darkened or lightened some a little so the text stays readable. None of them drowns out the others; that’s what we want for the people here, too.

Who it’s forFor minds that never sit still. And for everyone else.

Creative minds, people who can’t sit still, autistic people and people with ADHD, overthinkers, neurotypical people and anyone who just wants a good coffee. We don’t ask for diagnoses and we don’t expect explanations. Coming alone is fine; coming with others is fine too.

Thinking a lot isn’t a flaw; it’s one way a mind works. We don’t want anyone to hear “stop thinking so much” from us. Coffee is the reason to come in; the point is a table where your mind can work the way it works.

This is a café, not a therapy centre. We intend to be a good café; we’re not promising more than that.

  • Headphones are fine

Wearing them is no problem; we don’t want anyone to ask you why.

  • Sitting alone is fine

You don’t have to talk. Sitting quietly is an option too.

  • Getting up and moving about is fine

Stepping out and coming back, staying a long time, changing seats: all fine.

  • Things to play with and read partly planned

There are a few things to play with and read; you don’t need to ask. We’re also planning a basket of small things to fiddle with.

  • Quiet hours planned

We’re planning hours with no music and no events. Once they’re set, they’ll be on the notice board.

    See the board

  • Ordering without talking planned

We’re planning a small two-sided card for every table: one side says “I’d like to order”, the other “I don’t need anything right now”. The aim is that you don’t have to call anyone over or talk to anyone.

  • Your cat or dog

Let us know beforehand and we’ll sort it out together; then cats and dogs can come in.

  • If it gets too much

Just say “I need a calmer corner”; we won’t ask for an explanation. We’ll do what we can; you can leave whenever you like.

These are intentions, not promises. On this page we note which of them we’ve actually managed to do.
